The Huon Trail to the south of Hobart, takes in the outer suburb of Taroona and flows along the D’Entrecasteaux Channel to the Far South region. The area abounds with sheltered waterways, cool-climate vineyards and bountiful farmlands adjoining World Heritage Wilderness. A rich maritime and rural heritage defines the region, now famous for distinctive food and wine promoting taste, quality and seasonality. This unique environment has encouraged creative, eclectic communities where visitors are warmly welcomed. The area offers surprises such as Bruny Island, just 40 minutes from Hobart, with its wild coastlines and plentiful marine life and Cockle Creek, the furthest south it is possible to drive in Australia. At the heart of the Huon and Channel districts lies the bustling town of Huonville and further south is Geeveston, gateway to the Hartz Mountains National Park and the Tahune Forest Reserve. Dover and the Far South provide access to Hastings Caves, one of the world’s great dolomite caves formed more than 40 million years ago. |
